Virgin Pulse

(Formerly known as Blue Mesa Health)

Who they are

Blue Mesa is a health technology company on a mission to optimize the global population’s health by using science, data, and design to deliver digital therapeutics. Having started as three co-founders in the NYC Blueprint HealthTech Accelerator, Blue Mesa Health’s Diabetes Prevention Program (DPP) has been translated into five languages and delivered on four continents. The company was acquired by Virgin Pulse in 2020 and is now part of its employee-benefits service portfolio.

Our Work

Alteria developed a comprehensive digital therapeutics platform for Blue Mesa Health to prevent Type 2 diabetes. This platform, designed to improve patient outcomes, included mobile apps, a web dashboard, and a HIPAA-compliant backend. We had accountability for privacy and security compliance, system architecture, content translation management, and user experience.  Also developed a pre-LLM health chatbot with BERT, intent classification, and NLP.

Additionally, we integrated educational content, managed translations, and ensured strict adherence to CDC guidelines.

The Challenges

Alteria helped Blue Mesa meet CDC diabetes-prevention guidelines through agile development, creating a clear roadmap of features and a clinically effective digital program with 6.1% average weight loss and 75% user retention at nine months.

They built the first product iteration, including mobile apps, a health coach dashboard, and an HIPAA-compliant backend. Alteria also transitioned the API to GraphQL for real-time sync, ensured compliance through audits, and selected a tech stack optimized for rapid iteration.

The Outcome

Despite challenges like agile development and scaling the team in a fast-paced startup environment, we successfully launched the platform, achieving significant user engagement and positive health outcomes.
